| Zouk
& Lambada
This dance has brought partner dancing back to the dance floor. It usually has fast pacing. The music was started by the Djs of Belém, in the northest of Brazil, as a variant of carimbó and forró, with elements from merengue, salsa and reggae. A lighter version was developed in Bahia and caught the interest of French record producers in 1988. In France and in Africa lambada was developed into Zouk, with a similar rhythm, but singed in French. The word Zouk means 'party' in the Creole language! Zouk draws its power from the rich musical heritage of Africa (Cabo Verde, Angola etc.) and the islands of the French Antilles (Guadeloupe, Martinique etc.). The Zouk is danced differently in Brazil than in any other part of the world, characterized as a partner dance full of body waves. The music makes you want to move. Zouk is not only an elegant, graceful and beautiful dance, but also good exercise, stress relieving, and funny. Nowadays, Zouk is immensely popular in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, London and Amsterdam. Check out the schedule here! |
